Thank God Movie Review Rating: 3.5/5

They say making someone laugh is one of the hardest jobs, but filmmaker Indra Kumar has been doing this tough job pretty well for several decades now. He has to his credit some of the most successful comedy films of the last few decades, including Ishq (1997), Masti (2004), Dhamaal (2007), Double Dhamaal (2011), Great Masti (2013), and Total Dhamaal (2019). With his latest directorial offering Thank God, starring his frequent collaborator Ajay Devgn alongside Sidharth Malhotra, and Rakul Preet Singh, the veteran filmmaker tries to tickle the funny bones of the audience once again. Our BollywoodMDB reviewer has seen the film, and here is what he feels about the same.

STORY: Self-obsessed megalomaniac, Ayaan Kapoor (Sidharth Malhotra) is a debt-ridden real estate agent who is struggling hard to put his life back on track. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he meets with an unfortunate accident and ends up meeting Chitragupta (Ajay Devgn) in heaven. Chitragupta gives him a choice to play a game of life. If Kapoor wins the game, he will be forgiven for every wrongdoing he has done in life and sent back to Earth. But if he loses, he will be sent to hell. What happens next forms the crux of the story.

HIGHS: Thank God is a film you will best enjoy if you do not put your brain to use. It is even better if you keep your brain at home and go and watch the film with your friends and family. It is an out-and-out no-brainer family entertainer that manages to make you laugh more often than not.

Talking about performances, this is the first time that Ajay Devgn and Sidharth Malhotra have teamed up together and we must say that they manage to impress us with their acts. Malhotra, who was last seen in Shershaah (2021), picks up a very different character and shows his versatility yet again. His charm and aura, along with a highly endearing performance, will keep you hooked to the screen. Ajay Devgn plays the character of Chitragupta, who is a mix of modern and old, with ease. He seems to be having a lot of fun with a character that does not require him to put in loads of effort. It feels like a cakewalk for him. Rakul Preet Singh as a cop is convincing, but her character does not have much meat to stand out in presence of Malhotra and Devgn. However, she plays her part honestly and is terrific in some parts.

As mentioned earlier, Indra Kumar is a filmmaker who knows the pulse of the audience, something that has helped him deliver so many blockbuster films over the years. He is an absolute entertainer who never disappoints with his cinema. Thank God is his perfect Diwali gift to his audience.

Other major highlights of the film are the great CGI work used to create visuals of heaven and hell. Overall cinematography of the film is quite captivating, and so are the dialogues which are not only entertaining but also come laced with an important message.

LOWS: Thank God fails at the execution level. At times, the film looks dated for reasons inexplicable. Indra Kumar’s films are known for having great music. However, barring a song of two, there is nothing great on the soundtrack of the film.

FINAL VERDICT: Thank God is not a flawless film. There are certain issues at the execution level that could have easily been fixed to make it even more appealing and thus, entertaining. Having said that, the film has a lot of factors going for it, right from punchy dialogues and beautiful performances from the cast. If you are someone who looks for logic in everything you watch, better watch something else. But in case you want to enjoy a few hours of laughter and fun with your friends and family, head straight to the theatre closest to you. I am going with 3.5 stars.
