Tejas Review: The film fails to soar as high as it should

Most recently seen in Tamil-language comedy horror film Chandramukhi 2, Kangana Ranaut plays the title role in debutant filmmaker Sarvesh Mewar’s Tejas.

Tejas Movie Review Rating: 3.5/5

There is no denying the fact that Kangana Ranaut is one of the most gifted actresses working in Indian cinema today. She has proved her acting prowess time and again and boasts of several successful films and prestigious honours in her repertoire. Having said that, the past few years have not been as fruitful for her as she would have probably expected. She was most recently seen in Tamil-language comedy horror film Chandramukhi 2, which failed to click with the audience. Her films which came before Chandramukhi 2 also did not perform well at the ticket counter. It has been a long time since Ranaut delivered a cleat hit and her fans are expecting her to make a solid comeback with Tejas. Will her dry spell end with Tejas, which opens in cinemas today? BollywoodMDB reviewer has seen the film and here’s is what he has to say about the same. Do read the details review of Tejas only on BollywoodMDB before booking your tickets.

STORY: Touted to be an aviation thriller, Tejas draws its inspiration from the Indian Air Force’s 2016 decision to welcome women into combat positions. Tejas (Kangana Ranaut) and her piloting partner Afia (Anshul Chauhan) go on a mission to rescue a kidnapped civil servant from an aboriginal island and what happens next forms the crux of the story.

HIGHS & LOWS: Tejas is a well-intentioned film but with a few issues one cannot ignore. The film is very rushed and does not allow you to establish a connect with the characters. The first half of the film seems poorly executed. There is too much to and fro that you may miss important details.

Talking about the VFX of the film, it disappoints big time. The audience has seen better VFX work in films and each time they watch a new film which uses VFX, they expect it to be better than the previous film they watched. The aircrafts look like toy planes flying on a green-screen. Cinematography by Hari K Vedantam is commendable through. He efficiently captures the airstrikes and fight sequences.

Ranaut does complete justice to the character of Tejas Gill. She looks absolutely impressive when she slides into the uniform of an Air Force pilot. Anshul Chauhan turns out to be a perfect casting for the character of Afia. She delivers an impeccable performance. Ashish Vidyarthi is seen in a brief role but does justice to it.

FINAL VERDICT: In spite of some flaws, Tejas makes for a compelling viewing. The film has beautiful cinematography and a star performance full of authenticity. Kangana Ranaut once again proves her acting mettle in the titular role. She can nail just any character irrespective of genre. Direction from Sarvesh Mewara is deft. I am going with 3.5 stars.
