K.G.F - Chapter 2 Movie Review Rating: 4/5
When K.G.F: Chapter 1 hit screens in 2018, nobody thought in their wildest dreams that it would go on to attain cult status among film enthusiasts in India. Originally made in Kannada, the lavishly-mounted period action film surprised trade pundits with its outstanding performance in the Hindi market. After a long wait of four years, K.G.F: Chapter 2, the second installment of the franchise, enters theatres today amid huge expectations. Our reviewer has just watched the film, and here’s what he has to say about the same.
STORY: K.G.F: Chapter 2 picks up where its predecessor left off in 2018. Author Anand Vasiraju’s son, Vijayendra (Prakash Raj), continues to tell the larger-than-life story of Rocky (Yash) to the editor of a news channel. He tells how Rocky has built an imperishable empire in KGF with his acumen and cleverness, transforming himself from ‘Bhai’ to ‘Bhagwan’ for his people. As his empire grows by leaps and bounds, Adheera (Sanjay Dutt) and his army plan to kill him.
Adheera is not the only opponent he has to deal with to save what he has built from scratch; he has a great threat from India’s Prime Minister Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon), who wants to clip his wings. While Rocky somehow manages to deal with Adheera, things are never going to be easy with the government. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
HIGHS: What made K.G.F: Chapter 1 a global hit was its unique storytelling, powered by brilliant performances and massive scale. Director Prashanth Neel does not deviate from the formula that worked wonders for him in the first installment. He mounts the film on a larger-than-life canvas, gives powerful dialogues to his character and makes them deliver their best in every single frame. It all shows what a great storyteller he is.
Talking about performances, Yash delivers an outstanding act. His unmatched swagger and suaveness will make you whistle many times during the run of the film. The actor is at the top of his game, and K.G.F: Chapter 2 is going to cement his position as a performer par excellence further. The director has given him some of the punchiest dialogues, and they sound even more electrifying and enjoyable when Yash mouths them in style. Sanjay Dutt as Adheera is terrifying. After a long gap, he has delivered a performance that is going to be remembered for a long, long time. His fans are going to love him in this character. His aura and towering personality suit the character to a tee. Raveena Tandon as Prime Minister Ramika Sen is amazing. It is so good to see her in a well-written part that she does complete justice to the star that she is. Srinidhi also nails her character. She has got more screen time in the second installment, and she makes good use of every second. All the supporting actors contribute well to the film.
The film scores well in the technical department as well. Right from impeccable cinematography to extraordinary background music, K.G.F: Chapter 2 passes with flying colours in every department. Cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda and music director Ravi Basrur have taken the film to a different level.
LOWS: No film is perfect, and the same goes for K.G.F: Chapter 2 as well. While watching the film, you may feel it does not lack anything anywhere. But when you play it in your head again, you realise style overpowers substance more often than not.
FINAL VERDICT: K.G.F: Chapter 2 is a thoroughly entertaining film with absolutely no dull moments. Stellar performances, skilful direction, breathtaking cinematography, and an astounding background score are some of the major highlights of the film. Believe me it is impossible to imagine a more delightful time spent at the movies this weekend than with this Prashanth Neel directorial venture. Do yourself a favour and book your tickets right now. I am going with 4 stars.
