Bachchhan Paandey Movie Review Rating: 2/5

Films have taken a new dimension in terms of content in the last several years. Bollywood films seemed to have evolved beyond the point where a film starring a big star was a sure thing. Despite growing up on a regimen of desi food, we've got the taste for Italian, Chinese, Thai, and Mexican cuisine, as well as South Indian cuisine!

When you meet Bachchan Pandey, it's as if you walk into a posh restaurant expecting a sumptuous meal, but all you get is vada-pav. Bachchan Pandey is like an underdone stew, cramming in elements from every genre without stopping to see if the combination works. What was filmmaker Farhad Samji considering when he sat down to write this apologetic script? It's completely acceptable to make reference to classic masala films, but the modern interpretation must be contemporary; you must evolve with the times. Too many cooks, they say, spoil the broth. The film is muddled by the honeycomb plot with utterly pointless twists and turns authored by six writers.

The plot is heavily influenced by the Telugu film 'Gaddalakonda Ganesh,' a film adaptation of the Tamil hit 'Jigarthanda.' The plot revolves around an assistant director who yearns to be a big director. She decides to make a film about a gangster. In her search for a gangster, she comes across the ruthless gangster Bachchan Paandey.

The best way to experience this film is to plan ahead of time what you expect from it. Let's face it: there's nothing new about what's going on. If you enjoy both action and comedy, then you will have a good time. Only Warsi stands out from the rest of the cast. His slapstick comedy is the icing on the cake. He's a real treat. Sanon also does an excellent job and receives the most screen time. Her friendship and wordplay with Warsi are the film's standout scenes. Fernandez has been relegated to the passenger seat.
